Wylie Sofia Garcia debuts Dazzle Camouflage @ Ggallery Houston

Dazzle Camouflage
Wylie Sofia Garcia
November 3-December 2, 2012

Between November 7, 2010 and November 6, 2011 artist Wylie Sofia Garcia embarked on a year long project titled The Dress That Makes The Woman. The Premise: One Year. Twelve Dresses. One Woman. One Artist’s challenge to create and to wear a work of art for each month of the year. Dazzle Camouflage, Garcia’s first exhibition at G Gallery, is the sparkling detritus of personal couture, photo documentation, and blog entries from a project that asks does the dress really make the woman or is it the woman who really makes the dress? Dazzle Camouflage is a vertiginous metaphor for personal discovery and a desire to connect to the feminine human condition.

Wylie Sofia Garcia was born in Houston, Texas in 1980. She received her B.A. from The University of Chicago and her M.F.A. from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has participated in artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, the Seven Below Fund in Burlington, VT, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA, Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China and the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport, ME. She has received numerous awards and grants including most recently a Creation Grant from the Vermont Arts Council and a Fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center from the Sustainable Arts Foundation. Her work is in many private collections and has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the U.S.including The Art Complex Museum, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and the Brattleboro Museum.
