The American Craft Council is sponsoring a gala birthday celebration reception for all conference participants following the SDA Members’ Fashion Show, Bodies of Water on June 11, 2011.

The site for the show is the atrium of the Grainbelt Bottle House, an outstanding adaptive reuse venue in Northeast Minneapolis. The ACC’s new headquarters are across the street from this venue in another of the restored Grainbelt buildings.

The gala event will celebrate the 35^th birthday of the Surface Design Association and the 70^th birthday of the American Craft Council.  The Council moved into the new Minneapolis headquarters from longtime New York headquarters in the summer of 2010.  American Craft Council: http://www.craftcouncil.org/

Calling all Hyde Park Artists!

For the month of June 2011, Gallery Black Lagoon will host an exhibit dedicated to showcasing a diverse group of artists that live & work in the Hyde Park Neighborhood of Austin TX.


This exhibit is open to all forms of artwork: flat art, jewelry, glass & mosaic, ceramics, sculpture & more! (For items like jewelry, you must provide either a white bookcase/shelf, or displays that can be mounted to the wall)


There will be an opening and closing show, the gallery is open and staffed Sat, Sun, and Mon 12-4pm.

 
Artists make 100% commission on all sales (with a 5% charge for credit card purchases).


Entry Fee is $150 for a 4ftX9ft wall space for the month and $200 for a 6ftX9ft wall space. Piece count is limited to 3 rows of pieces. For sculpture or free standing art pieces, you will have 3ft of floor space from the wall (so 3ft out by 4ft, or 3ft out by 6ft). Artists are NOT required to attend opening or closing reception.


Deadline to sign up is April 20th. Pieces need to be delivered to Gallery Black Lagoon between June 2-3 with price tags, and must be ready to hang. We can work out a payment plan, but the full entry fee must be paid by May 10th.


The Opening Reception will be on Saturday June 4th from 6pm-10pm. A Closing Reception will be on Sunday June 26th from 2pm-5pm.

There is only room for 30 artists!


We accept submissions only via email in .jpg (JPEG), or .pdf (Acrobat). Please include 5-10 digital images along with resume and artist statement.

Reminder about the upcoming 2011 SDA conference

 

 

Many participants who have attended the conferences feel that it' has been one of the best experiences of being an SDA member. There are usually loads of exhibitions- an average of 20 - 30 of them. SDA is partnering with the Textile Center of Minnesota, which is a very cutting edge facility. There will be a fashion show, a vendor show, a DIY fair, and more, plus many speakers and events. We also have a regional meet-and-greet which allows members in regional areas get to know one another! Do consider attending, the benefits are countless!

March Meeting of Austin Fiber Artists

 Japanese Textiles 101: Antique to Modern Japanese Textiles were presented by artist and  collector, Carola Pfau.  Carola will be shared some of her collection and creations with us.  A quic blurb from her bio:

 "It wasn’t so much that my interest in textiles began then but that later I had some appreciation of what truly unusual things she (a teacher)had done with us. "

 At 21 I left Germany for Japan to study Japanese.  Having always been an avid fleamarketeer I found my way to the Tokyo and Kyoto flea/antique markets being held at temples and shrines.  At that time in 1980 few Japanese were interested in old kimonos and used old futon covers.

 Well, I fell into fleamarket heaven the most unbelievably gorgeous colours and textures for close to no money which was great because of course I didnt have much money as a student.  That is when I began learning about Japanese textile design and techniques. From these early beginnings I developed an appreciation also for other folk textiles which never left me and although I didnt begin working full time with textiles until about 15 years ago I always bought, collected and played with my found treasures...I finally decided to do what I loved, and since then have been dealing in antique textiles.
