Call for Nominations -- 2012 Texas Master

Nominate the 2012 Texas Master!
Deadline for Nominations: January 22, 2011

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft invites you to nominate the next Texas Master craft artist.

HCCC initiated its
Texas Masters exhibition series in 2005 to provide much-needed recognition of Texas artists who have dedicated themselves to making craft, and is seeking a fourth awardee.
The other 3 are:
Harlan Butt

Cindy Hickok

                                                                        and Rachel Thiewes.

HCCC is currently seeking nominations from across the state. All qualified nominees must:
  • Live and work in Texas or have spent a significant time practicing in Texas
  • Work in one of the craft media: wood, metal, glass, ceramic, fiber and/or repurposed materials
  • Have received recognition for high levels of excellence and success in their discipline and/or made a significant impact in the craft community through their work, guidance, and contributions to the field.
Remember, surface design does necessarily always have to pertain to fabric!
Nominated artists will be reviewed by the Exhibitions Committee.

The chosen artist will receive a solo show in the fall of 2012, have a DVD made cataloguing their process and techniques, and will serve on the jury panel for CraftTexas 2014, the biennial juried exhibition highlighting the best of craft being produced in Texas today.

If you know someone who should be considered, we encourage you to
download the nomination form and submit it by January 22, 2011.
Please direct any questions to Anna Walker, Curatorial Fellow, at 713.529.4848 X 113 or via email at awalker@crafthouston.org.

Thank you for helping HCCC recognize excellence in the field of craft!

Workshop @ the Southwest School of Art

Barbara Kile and Nadia Khan are members of the Houston Area Fiber Artists, and will be in San Antonio to teach a workshop during February at the Southwest School of Art.
Nadia has taught numerous silk painting workshops at the Southwest School of Art, and she teaches in Houston at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, as well as independent workshops.
Barbara is an adjunct professor at Houston Community College in the Fashion Department, and she teaches at the Glassell School of Art / MFAH and at the Taos Wool Festival.

Using French silk dyes, students will explore different techniques to achieve color, texture, and pattern. Methods for preparing and stretching silk for painting and the steam-setting process for fixing the dyes will be demonstrated. Then students will explore nuno felting - felting into weave - using the painted silks as the base fabric in the felting process. Wool fibers will be layered on the painted silk, and after completing the felting and fulling process, nuno felt samplers will be created. The resulting fabric is lightweight, drapes well, and can be used for many applications! No dyeing or felting experience is necessary to join!

Class meets: Fri, Feb 18  1:00 - 5:00P and Sat & Sun, Feb 19 & 20  9:30A - 3:00P

The workshop is limited to 10 people, so sign up soon if you're interested! If you have questions or would like more information, email NadiaKhanSilks@gmail.com

Elephant Embellishments @ the November AFA meeting

I know this is in the past, but I couldn't help wanting to share some of the pictures from the November AFA meeting. Elephant Embellishments is owned and operated by two sisters in central Texas. Lalon and Theresa came to our meeting and shared their amazing stories, their incredible work, and even did a demo on bead work! Both have attended the London College of Fashion, The Paris Fashion Institute, and even Ecole Lesage.  Their work has appeared in major motion pictures and on Broadway.
