Repurposing Art In The Natural Dye Garden

GREENMEME / MAP 2013 AT UNT, DENTON

Working with University of North Texas fiber’s students and UNT artist / teacher, Lesli Robertson, Greenmeme designed and produced a canopy and seating area from repurposed nautical rope previously used in a public sculpture in Long Beach, CA. Titled "Knotty Nest", this MAP 2013 project includes a permanent seating and a shade canopy out of repurposed materials from a public art piece in Long Beach, California for the new Natural Dye Garden at UNT. The idea for this piece evolved after several conversation between Janeil Engelstad / MAP and Lesli Robertson at UNT. Titled "Knotty Nest" this a collaborative, participatory project developed for the greater Denton community.

This annual competition and exhibition of contemporary crafts was started in 1987 and is now in it's 27th year. Recognized nationally, Materials: Hard & Soft attracts hundreds of entries from every state in the union. Nationally recognized jurors select the show from slides and then award $5000 in prize money. FASA Satellite Group and SDA Texas Quarterly Meeting

FASA Satellite Group
Satellite group update: At the recent Surface Design Association Conference, members met by regions to discuss matters of interest & concern. Diane Sandlin, Executive Director of SDA proposed that local SDA members might wish to meet quarterly for networking & sharing of ideas and techniques. It was noted that the FASA Satellite group provided a model for such a meeting and was already established. At the FASA Board meeting of 29 MAY several members had expressed an interest in establishing relations with local fiber groups for purposes of sharing information and speakers. The synchronicity of these ideas generated a lot of enthusiasm.
Miki Rodriguez, Member Services Coordinator for SDA and FASA member and Caryl Gaubatz offered to coordinate a joint meeting between the FASA Satellite Group and local SDA members. Doerte Seale, FASA Satellite representative will host this joint meeting at Seale Studios on 7 JULY ( the day before the FASA General meeting and regular meeting time for the Satellite group). The format for the meeting will be the same as regular Satellite meetings: No business meeting, no refreshments, members are seated in a circle and take turns sharing their work, describing workshops they have taken, art books or articles they have read, or new products they have used. Critiques may be sought for work in progress.
Miki Rodriguez will present part of the incredible SDA Swatch Collection. The Swatch Collection is comprised of over 250 individual 12” x 12” fabric samples created by SDA members. The samples run the full range of techniques used in surface design. It is hoped that this collection will inspire those present to make and donate 12" samples of their own work to the DSA Swatch Library.
The Surface Design Association also has a program known as Small Events Grants. The purpose of the Small Event Grant is to support program-related expenses for local and regional SDA member activities. Funds may be used for curated, group, and juried exhibitions of SDA members’ works, and for SDA-sponsored lectures, workshops, and local or regional
meetings.
One does not have to be an SDA member to such lectures or workshops. Only exhibition support requires that all participants be members.
There will be lots of interested ideas generated at the next Satellite Meeting, which will be held on Sunday 7 July from 4-6 pm at Seale Studios, 415 Burr Rd.
Please RSVP to Doerte Weber if you plan on attending, so adequate seating can be provided.

Delaney Smith student work @ In*ter*face

Knebix, 2013
Delaney Smith

"I cast repurposed dead proofs from the printmaking department onto CNC routed letters to create nonsensical words. I focused on texture-the actual texture of the paper, and the oral texture of the words as they are formed in the mouths of viewers. The circular shape hints at the daily process of creating the piece. The repetitious cycle of casting individual pieces became a regular rhythm in my life."

You can see this piece on view for SDA’s exhibition, in•ter•face Linked Up, at the UTSA Downtown gallery in San Antonio, TX from June 6th to July 31.

  • Artists: Analise Minjarez, Brittany Harris, Morgan Kuster, and Julie Shipman

    April 13th - May 3rd
Opening Reception on Saturday, April 13th from 6-8 pm

... Commencing April 13th, Innate features art work of four Fiber students from the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. Through form and color, the work in this show draws inspiration from the artists’s connection to nature. Growing up in various natural environments, attraction to the fiber medium came as second nature. Living in an environment filled with the artificial, they aspire to return to a natural way of being through art making. These thoughts are expressed though processes including netting, weaving, watercolor, felt, and cellulose fabric.
